UMMC OB-GYN to offer HELLP

​Dr. Kedra Wallace, UMMC assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, will give the presentation, “HELLP Syndrome: An Overview of Molecular and Neurobehavioral Changes” from 3-4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 8, in Classroom 6A.

This event, open to all students, faculty and staff, is sponsored by the Department of Cell and Molecular biology.

Vermont professor to cover eclampsia, stroke during presentations

Dr. Marilyn J. Cipolla, professor of neurological sciences at the University of Vermont’s Larner College of Medicine, Burlington, will give a pair of presentations Jan. 8-9.

Cipolla will discuss “The Vascular Biology of Preeclampsia and Eclampsia” at noon on Monday, Jan. 8, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre), and “Targeting Brain Arterioles for Acute Stroke Treatment” at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 9, in classroom N318.

VUMC director leads surgery grand rounds

Dr. Benjamin Poulose, associate professor of general surgery and director of the Vanderbilt Hernia Center at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, will give the Surgery Grand Rounds presentation, "Common Bile Duct Stone Management" from 8-9 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10, in room CW 106 of the Classroom Wing.

Philadelphia DO to make presentation

Dr. Shawn Callahan, faculty candidate for the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomical Sciences at the Philadelphia College Osteopathic Medicine will present “Clinically Correlated Formative Assessments and Emphasizing Quality Cadaveric Dissection: Two Active Learning Approaches that Foster Critical Thinking, Long-Term Retention, and Student Motivation" from 11 a.m. - noon Monday, January 8, in classroom 6A (North Wing Room 617).

UAB chair to speak on diabetes prevention

Dr. Timothy Garvey, chair of the Department of Nutrition Sciences and professor of Nutrition Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and staff physician and GRECC investigator at Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Birmingham, Alabama will present the seminar “Diabetes Prevention in Obesity: Strategies Based on Cardiometabolic Disease Risk Stratification” on Thursday, January 11 from noon - 1 p.m. in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

The seminar is sponsored by the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research, Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research and the Cardiorenal and Metabolic Diseases Research Center.

Symposium to cover HTN clinical practice guidelines

Hypertension specialists from a number of leading medical institutions will speak during the Cardiovascular-Renal Research Center Symposium, “Hypertension Clinical Practice Guidelines: Changes in the Way High Blood Pressure is Evaluated and Managed,” from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 12, in classroom R153.

Scheduled speakers include Dr. Jan Basile, professor of medicine in the Seinsheimer Cardiovascular Health Program at the Medical University of South Carolina, Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, Charleston; Dr. Karen Griffin, professor of medicine at the Stritch School of Medicine, Loyola University Medical Center, Chicago; Dr. Brent Egan, professor of medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston; and Dr. Dan Jones, director of clinical and population sciences, Mr. and Mrs. Joe F. Sanderson Jr. Endowed Chair in Obesity, Metabolic Diseases and Nutrition. Dr. Marion Wofford, professor of medicine and medical director of adult hospital, also will participate in a panel discussion and audience participation session.

On the horizon

CI director to host town hall meetings

Dr. John Ruckdeschel, UMMC Cancer Institute director, will host the quarterly Cancer Institute Director’s meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 17 in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing and from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Jan. 18 in MK1109 at Jackson Medical Mall.

The Jan. 17 meeting will have a link to Cancer Institute members at the University of Mississippi in Oxford.

The meeting is open to all UMMC and UM employees who work with cancer patients or who conduct cancer research.  Meetings will include an overview of Cancer Institute objectives, an update on progress toward those objectives and a question-and-answer session.

Refreshments will be provided. Those attending Wednesday are welcome to bring their lunch.

IU's Klein to make experiential learning presentation

​Dr. Barbie Klein, faculty candidate for the Indiana University Department of Neurobiology and Anatomical Sciences will present “Experiential Learning in Anatomy and Medical Education Research" from noon - 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 17, in classroom 4A (North Wing Room 413).

The presentation is part of the Neurobiology and Anatomical Sciences Seminar Series.
